define bone china

Definition

  • Porcelain tableware is often referred to as china. The formula for making porcelain originated in China, hence the identifying term. Of the three types of porcelain, bone china is the most durable due to the content of bone ash. Bone ash is derived from animal that has been ground and burned. It is then crushed to a fine powder and mixed with water.

  • Clay

  • The animal bones are burned at 1000 degrees F to create bone ash. Feldspar, quartz, kaolin and china clay are then combined with the bone ash, with the ash making up approximately 50 percent of the mixture. Water is added and the resulting clay is then ready to be formed into tableware, vases or figurines.

What method of transforming the clay into forms depends on what is being made. To make dishes, jars or jugs, for example, a jigger is used. A jigger is a machine with a revolving mold that shapes the clay into the desired form. Plaster molds are used for irregular shapes such as gravy boats or vases.

Firing

  • The forms, referred to as greenware after being shaped, are then left to dry before being fired. This first firing is called biscuit and requires temperatures of approximately 2500 degrees F. During this part of the process, the forms are vitrified, meaning they become hardened and take on the translucent, creamy white color indicative of bone china.

The forms, which are now called biscuits, are then glazed and fired a second time. This second firing, called glost, melts the glaze, fusing it to the forms. The forms now become glostware.

Bone China

  • The glostware is then ready for decorating. Decorating methods include decal transferring, spraying, hand-painting and gold finishing. The pieces are then fired again, this time at lower temperatures, to fuse the pigments to the forms. The result is bone china.

Of the three types of porcelain, the other two being hard-paste and soft-paste, bone china is considered the most durable. Though it can last for many years, bone china is susceptible to chipping and cracking if mishandled. Some bone china is dishwasher safe, but it is best to hand wash these pieces with mild detergent and a soft cloth.

WHAT IS BCPL BONE CHINA?

Bone china is a type of porcelain that is composed of bone ash, feldspathic material and kaolin. It has been defined as 'ware with a translucent body containing a minimum of 30% of phosphate derived from animal bone and calculated calcium phosphate. Developed by English potter Josiah Spode, bone china is known for its high levels of whiteness and translucency, and very high mechanical strength and chip resistance.

HISTORY OF BONE CHINA:

The first development of what would become known as bone china was made by Thomas Frye at his Bow porcelain factory near Bow in East London in 1748. His factory was located very close to the cattle markets and slaughterhouses of Essex, and hence easy access to animal bones. Frye used up to 45% bone ash in his formulation to create what he called ‘fine porcelain.’ Although in quality it rivalled porcelain imported from Europe and China the factory was not a commercial success.

Later, Josiah Spode in Stoke further developed the concept, and finalised his formulation sometime between 1789 and 1793. Amongst his developments was to abandon Frye’s procedure of calcining the bone together with some of the other body raw materials, instead calcining just the bone. Bone china quickly proved to be highly popular leading to it being introduced by other English pottery manufacturers. Both Spode's formulation and business were successful: his formulation of 6 parts bone ash, 4 parts china stone and 3.5 parts china clay remains the base for all bone china still, and it was only in 2009 that his company, Spode, went into receivership before eventually being purchased by Portmeirion.

From its initial development up to the twentieth century, bone china remained almost exclusively an English product, with production being effectively localised to Stoke-on-Trent.
